Social Norms and Respectful Maternity Care
WHO defines Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) as humane and dignified treatment of a childbearing woman throughout her pregnancy, birth and the period following childbirth. During the intranatal period, RMC involves “care that maintains dignity, privacy, and confidentiality of pregnant and birthing women, ensures freedom from harm and mistreatment, and enables informed choice and continuous support during labor and birth” (Puthussery et al., 2023).
Keeping intranatal RMC practice at the core of the discussion, this webinar explored how social norms interplay at healthcare institutions placed at the exo/macro level of the socio-ecological model. The discourse benefitted from the perspectives of medical practitioners and researchers leading respectful maternity care practices in rural and urban areas.
